CAREER PROSPECT
- Accounting Technicians are employed throughout all levels of finance across the public sector, industry, private accountancy practices and self-employment.
- They perform a wide range of roles including bookkeeping, financial accounting and budgeting, costing and credit control, payroll administration and tax returns.
Courses Description
The Accounting and Business Skills Programme is a part-time course, commenced in January 2021. It takes place in class and online. Importantly, if you are currently receiving the Pandemic Unemployment Payment (PUP), you will be able to retain it while completing the course. At the end of the 8-month programme, you will receive the ATI Certificate for Accounting Technicians which is equated to a Level 5 on the National Framework of Qualifications. In addition to studying a range of accounting and business subjects, this course offers career guidance and employment supports to help you to identify career opportunities, succeed at interview, and secure a new role.

The syllabus has been carefully designed to equip students with an array of transferable business skills, as well as technical knowledge of finance and accountancy practice. The programme provides students with expertise, experience and knowledge in the areas such as financial accounting and budgeting, costing and credit control, payroll and tax returns for various types of business.
Once a student has successfully completed all four Year 1 subjects they will receive the Certificate for Accounting Technicians award. Year 1 offers a progression pathway into the Diploma for Accounting Technicians qualification, the leading Accounting Technician qualification in Ireland.
The Diploma for Accounting Technicians provides good employment opportunities for a broad range of accounting and finance roles and is well recognised by employers. There is a great variety of work within the accounting profession with a vast array of career opportunities to suit all interests including auditing and assurance work, consulting, corporate finance, tax planning and insolvency.
The qualification gives an excellent grounding in accounting, tax and law which provides employers with staff who are highly skilled in accounting techniques. Qualified Accounting Technicians possess the knowledge, skills and competencies to either work on their own or alongside professional accountants. They will find work in all types of organisations and are widely employed throughout the public sector, industry and in private accounting practices.

Learning Outcomes

You will be able to demonstrate knowledge of accounting concepts and principles of accounting and technical competency in the area of double entry accounting and accounts preparation for various types of business. At the end of the course, you will graduate with a good understanding of the main accounting and business areas. You will also develop important digital skills using Microsoft Office, which are required for today’s workplace. Finally, you will build on your interpersonal, or ‘soft’ skills, to help you succeed in acquiring a new role and which are essential for future career advancement. You will demonstrate knowledge of the core Business functions of Management, Marketing, Information Technology and Finance, as well as an understanding of how these functions affect the running of a modern business.
On completion of the course you will be enabled to:
- Think like a business-person with a solid understanding of the core areas of organisational structure and management, business ethics and law, financial accounting and taxation. Learn to communicate and develop reasoned-based decision-making to prepare you for future leadership and management roles
- Represent yourself confidently and effectively to employers and set yourself apart at application and interview stage
- Develop workplace-ready skills and feel energised about your career
- Have a clearly defined pathway to progress to further study in the future
- Assess your short-term and long-term career goals, and develop a professional-development plan to secure them.
Entry Requirements
Education: Learners, who are over 21, are considered as mature students and there are no entry requirements. For those under 21 the following entry requirements apply: Leaving Certificate with five passes in Ordinary Level papers. (Passes to include English/ and either Mathematics or Accountancy) or Leaving Certificate with four passes of which at least two are in Higher Level papers. (Passes to include English and either Mathematics or Accountancy) or Learners who are sitting the Applied Leaving Certificate should contact the Registrar (register@AccountingTechniciansIreland.ie) directly for advice on whether they are eligible or Learners under 21 who have successfully completed a nationally recognized qualification such as QQI, QQI (Level 5), QCA or a BTEC National Diploma may also be eligible to apply. Appropriate aptitude tests may be applied.
Aptitude: Good verbal and written communication skills are desirable. Accuracy in the use of numbers. Appropriate aptitude tests may be applied.
Previous Experience: Previous experience in book-keeping and / or accountancy desirable. Experience in using web based learning is an advantage.
Progression
Once a student has successfully completed all four Year 1 subjects they will receive the Certificate for Accounting Technicians award. Year 1 offers a progression pathway into the Diploma for Accounting Technicians qualification, the leading Accounting Technician qualification in Ireland.
Certification
