Course Description
This course is designed for students who may not know what type of apprenticeship they wish to pursue. It is a practical based training course intended for students who wish to progress into a full apprenticeship in areas such as carpentry, joinery, plumbing, blockwork, electrical and energy systems. The course provides students with the opportunity for work experience (1 day per week) while also developing a greater understanding of health and safety in the workplace, mathematics and communication skills.
Minimum Entry Requirements
Education: NFQ Level 4 or equivalent when accessing a Level 5 programme. CERFL proficiency at B2 for access to Level 5 courses for those whose first language is not English Mature learner entry requirements available via the local ETB pathway Additional requirements may apply to non-EU/EEA Applicants and may be subject to full international fees (Please refer to Information for International Learners) *Each provider may have additional requirements, not outlined above.
Aptitude: Applicants must have a motivation to learn, an interest in the subject and the ability to acquire the knowledge, skills and competencies set out in the course.
Previous Experience: Applicants must be able to demonstrate a moderate range of knowledge, skills and competencies relevant to the course, be able to work with responsibility and demonstrate the ability to work on their own initiative.
Employment Statement: The successful completion of the QQI Level 5 award in Construction Technology will enable applicants to work independently and under supervision in a range of construction industry contexts whilst applying current building regulations and safety and health regulations to specific construction related projects.
Progression
The full QQI Level 5 Certificate facilitates entry, on a competitive basis, to a range of third-level institutions nationwide. Further details are available from the relevant institutions. Specific progression links are available with SETU – Waterford & Carlow Campus for this course.
Costs
A SafePass is required for anyone entering a construction site to work. We will organise the course in October (subject to numbers) for those who do not have one.

Work Experience
Work experience placement is an integral part of this course. Students must obtain one day per week work experience for the academic year. The day will be specified by the College. Opportunity to attend Safe Pass Course will be afforded to all students at their own expense.
